Birth of Venus
While this was designed as a project for my Drag & Burlesque Design class, this design is a manifestation of my dream costume I would love to build. Inspired by various elements of Dita Von Teese’s magnificent productions and props with the high couture from several of Thierry Mugler’s eccentric fashion, this is a story of the Birth of Venus from the sea. From Botticelli’s shell, she emerges from the ocean dripping in crystals and water before she sheds her seaweed coverings.
Lord Remington
The Right Dishonourable Lord Remington, Baron of Todgerton, was also conceptualized for a class project. Inspired by a name my mother loved, Remington is nontoxic hypermasculinity. I looked to classic heroes from Regency era novels, as well as romance novel tropes, to create the perfect Regency playboy. To further fit into the drag world, the physical aspects of masculinity are overly exaggerated into all aspects of a dandy’s costume. Sexuality and flirtiness make up his entire personality, and he’s determined to make the crowd fall in love with him.
Remington Buttler
A secondary part of my class project was to create a celebrity impersonation mixed with the aesthetics of our drag persona. To still thematically align with Remington’s 1800s playboy ways, I chose Rhett Butler. This keeps Remington in the realm of the 19th C. and mixes his visuals and personality with a very recognizable character that still meshes nicely.
